Professional cards get treated as bulletproof, and mostly they earn it. But CF and CFexpress fail in ways that consumer SD cards don’t, and the right first move depends on which failure you’ve got.

Rule out the reader first
Before you conclude anything about the card, eliminate the two cheapest suspects.
The reader. Card readers fail constantly, and USB-C readers running hot fail faster. Try a different reader and a different port — directly on the machine, not through a hub or dock.
The camera. If the card reads fine in the camera but not the computer, that’s a reader or cable problem, not a card problem. Copy the files off using the camera as the reader if you have to. It’s slower and it works.

Bent pins: the CompactFlash special
CompactFlash uses a 50-pin connector where the pins are in the camera or reader, not the card. The card has holes.
Insert a CF card at a slight angle and you bend pins inside the device. Symptoms: the card doesn’t detect, or detects intermittently, or reads corrupt data — and then the next card you try does the same thing, which is the tell. If two known-good cards both misbehave in the same body, stop inserting cards. You’re bending more pins.
Look into the slot with a bright light. Bent pins are visible and, in a repair shop’s hands, often straightenable.
CFexpress and SD don’t have this failure mode — different connector design.
The failures that are actually the card
Controller failure. Every card has a controller chip that translates addresses and manages wear levelling. When it dies, the card is completely undetected — no capacity, no name, nothing. The NAND chips still hold your images, but reaching them means bypassing the controller entirely, and on modern cards that’s difficult, expensive, and often not possible at all. The SSD version of this problem is the same story.
Worn NAND. Flash cells have finite write cycles. A card that’s been filled and formatted weekly for four years has been through real wear. Symptoms are gradual: occasional corrupt files, slower writes, the card dropping to a smaller reported capacity.
File system corruption. The card is fine, the index isn’t — usually from pulling it mid-write or a battery dying during a buffer flush. This is the common one and the one that recovers well.
Physical damage. Cracked CFexpress housings, snapped SD tabs, cards that went through a wash cycle. Flash tolerates water far better than hard drives do; if the controller and NAND survive, wet cards often recover fine.

What to do the moment a card misbehaves
Stop writing to it. Take it out of the camera. Don’t shoot another frame on it. This is the whole game — deleted and orphaned images stay recoverable only until something writes over them.
Don’t format it, even when the camera or the computer insists. Formatting when prompted is the single most common way photographers lose a shoot.
Don’t let the camera repair it. Some bodies offer to fix a card. That’s a format with a friendlier name.
Don’t run consumer recovery software as a first resort — and if you do, never install it onto the card, and work from a copy if the tool can make one.
Why RAW files recover well
Some good news specific to your work.
RAW formats — CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF — have distinctive header signatures and consistent structure. Even when the file system is destroyed, carving RAW files out of a card image works well, and cameras write sequentially, so images tend to sit in large contiguous runs rather than scattered fragments.
That means a card with total file system loss often yields nearly every frame. You may lose the original filenames and get sequential numbering instead, but the images come back, full resolution, with EXIF intact.
Video is less forgiving. Large files fragment more, and a partially recovered video is frequently unplayable where a partially recovered stills folder is just a shorter folder.
Cost and the value question
Card recovery follows my normal pricing — logical work at the low end, controller-level work higher and sometimes declined outright.
Worth saying plainly: for a personal card, sometimes the honest answer is that recovery costs more than the photos are worth to you. For a paid shoot, it rarely is. I’ll tell you which situation I think you’re in.
The bottom line
Check the reader before you blame the card, and check the camera’s pins if two cards fail in the same body. Once you suspect the card, stop writing to it and don’t accept any offer to format or repair. Corrupted file systems recover well and RAW files carve beautifully — dead controllers are the ones that don’t.
Card not reading? Start a case — tell me the card type, the camera body, and whether it fails in more than one reader. If it’s a paid job with a deadline, say that too.
