Not every failing drive clicks. Some grind. Some buzz. Some let out a high whine that wasn’t there last month.
These sounds mean different things, and they carry different odds. Here’s how to tell them apart — and the one instruction that applies to all of them.
The instruction that applies to all of them

Any of these noises means moving parts are in a state they shouldn’t be in. Every additional second of spinning is more wear, and in the worst case it’s magnetic material being scraped off the platter surface — which is the one form of damage nobody recovers from.
Grinding or scraping
A rough, abrasive sound. Continuous rather than rhythmic. Often described as sandy or like something dragging.
This is the worst sound a drive makes. It usually means one of two things:
Head-to-platter contact. The heads are supposed to fly on a cushion of air a few nanometers above the surface. If one has failed or been knocked out of position, it’s now dragging. That contact removes the magnetic coating, and the debris it generates gets flung around inside the sealed chamber, scratching everything else.
Spindle bearing failure. The motor bearing has worn or seized, and the platter assembly is no longer rotating smoothly. Rotational instability means the heads can’t track properly either.
Grinding is not something to wait out. Damage accumulates every rotation — roughly 7,200 of them per minute — and unlike most failures, this one destroys data rather than just blocking access to it.
Buzzing
A low electrical hum or vibration, usually at spin-up, often with the drive failing to come fully up to speed.
Typically the motor trying to turn a spindle that won’t move freely, or a power delivery problem on the board. Related to drives that spin up and stop, and sometimes to stiction — where heads have adhered to the platter surface after sitting unpowered for a long time, common in drives pulled out of storage after years in a closet.
Buzzing is better news than grinding. Nothing is being scraped yet. But repeated attempts to force a stuck spindle can shear the head arms, so the number of times you try matters a great deal.
High-pitched whine
A whistle or squeal that’s new, usually constant while the drive is powered.
Almost always a spindle bearing that’s worn but hasn’t seized. This is early-stage — the drive may still be fully readable right now.
That makes it the most useful warning on this list, because you’re being told before the failure rather than after. A whining drive that still mounts is a drive to get data off of today, not next weekend.

For comparison: clicking and beeping
Clicking — rhythmic, repetitive, evenly spaced. The heads failing to find their calibration position and resetting over and over.
Beeping — an actual electronic-sounding tone. Not a beeper; it’s the motor straining against a spindle that won’t turn, most familiar on Seagate externals.
What not to do
- Don’t power-cycle it repeatedly. The single most damaging thing available to you. Each attempt is another chance for a dragging head to find fresh platter.
- Don’t try it in another computer. Another computer means another power cycle. The noise won’t change.
- Don’t put it in the freezer. A 1990s myth that doesn’t apply to modern drives, and condensation on platters adds damage that wasn’t there.
- Don’t run recovery software. Software can’t fix mechanics, and running it means keeping the drive spinning for hours while it tries.
- Don’t open it. Ordinary room air carries particles enormous compared to head flying height.
What happens next
Mechanical noise means the electronics can’t solve it. These are cleanroom cases — head stack replacement, platter work, or spindle repair in a Class 100 environment I don’t operate.

The exception is the whine. A drive with early bearing noise that still reads is often a normal imaging job — and if you’ve caught it at that stage, it’s worth acting today.
The bottom line
Grinding means contact and lost data. Buzzing means a stuck spindle and nothing destroyed yet. Whining means a bearing on the way out while the drive still works. All three say the same thing about what to do right now: turn it off and stop trying.
