Dropped Your External Hard Drive? Do These Things in This Order

The drive slid off the desk, or the couch, or out of the bag. Maybe it was running at the time, maybe not. Maybe it looks completely fine. Whether it is fine depends on physics that happened in about two milliseconds, and the steps you take in the next ten minutes matter more than anything else you’ll do.

First: was it powered on when it fell?

This is the single biggest variable.

Powered off: the read/write heads were parked on their ramp, away from the platters. Drives tolerate off-state drops much better. It may be completely fine — spinning drives are shock-rated far lower than parked ones.

Powered on: the heads were flying over the platter surface at a gap smaller than a smoke particle. An impact while running can slap the heads into the platters — that’s what a head crash literally is. Even a short drop onto carpet can do it.

The one test you get

If the drive was powered off when it fell and shows no rattle when gently tilted (a rattle means something broke loose inside — stop, do not power it), you get one careful test: plug it in and listen before you look.

  • Normal spin-up, normal quiet operation, mounts fine: you likely got away with it. Copy your important data off now anyway — drives that survive drops sometimes develop problems over the following weeks as marginally-shifted components wear.
  • Clicking, buzzing, beeping, or repeated spin-up attempts: unplug it immediately. Clicking after a drop means the heads are damaged or can’t find their position — the details are in my clicking drive guide. Beeping means the motor can’t spin, usually stuck heads or a seized bearing from the impact. Every additional second of power risks dragging damaged heads across your data.
  • Nothing at all — no spin, no sound: could be the enclosure’s electronics rather than the drive. Don’t start disassembling; on several popular models (WD My Passport especially) the enclosure board encrypts the data and the “obvious” fix of pulling the drive out makes things more complicated.

If it was powered on when it fell and it’s making any abnormal sound, skip the test entirely. You already know enough. Power off and get it evaluated.

What never works

The freezer. Tapping it with a screwdriver. Dropping it again from the other side (“it worked for a guy on a forum”). Opening the lid to look. Every one of these is a way to add contamination or platter damage to a drive that might have been cleanly recoverable. Modern drive tolerances make all the folk remedies from the 2000s actively destructive.

What recovery looks like

Drop damage spans a huge range. Cracked enclosure boards and connector damage are quick work. Mild head damage on a drive that still partially reads is careful imaging work — the drive gets read gently, damaged areas handled last, and it lands in the upper part of my $150–$500 range. Full head crashes with platter damage need cleanroom-level intervention, and if the evaluation shows that’s what happened, I’ll tell you straight and refer you to a lab equipped for it rather than experimenting on your only copy.

The bottom line

A dropped drive that sounds normal gets one job: give up its data to a backup, immediately. A dropped drive that sounds wrong gets zero jobs: power off, keep it off, get it evaluated. What separates good outcomes from bad ones in drop cases is almost never the drop itself — it’s how many times the drive was powered up afterward.
