Hard drives don’t have speakers. If your Seagate external drive is beeping, that sound isn’t a warning tone from firmware — it’s mechanical. It’s the sound of the spindle motor trying to spin the platters and failing, over and over. The “beep” is the motor stalling against something that won’t move.
That’s worth understanding, because it changes what you should do next. This isn’t a software problem, and nothing you run on your computer can fix it.
What causes the beeping
Two failure modes produce this sound, and they look identical from the outside:
Stiction. The read/write heads normally park on a ramp off to the side of the platters. If a drive gets bumped while running, or power is cut at the wrong instant, the heads can land on the platter surface and stick to it — the platters are polished smooth enough that the heads bond to them like two panes of wet glass. When you power up, the motor tries to spin, can’t overcome the stuck heads, and stalls with that beeping sound.
A seized motor. The fluid dynamic bearing the spindle rides on can fail, usually after a drop or hard impact. The motor tries to turn, can’t, and stalls the same way.
Seagate portable drives — Backup Plus, Expansion, One Touch — are the ones I see this on most, partly because they’re everywhere and partly because they’re often carried around in bags, which is exactly how drives get the bump that causes both problems.
What not to do
Don’t keep plugging it in. Every power-up attempt stresses the stuck heads or the seized bearing. In stiction cases, repeated attempts can tear the head assembly or drag it across the platter surface, converting a very recoverable situation into a partially recoverable one.
Don’t freeze it, tap it, or drop it “to unstick it.” These tricks circulate online because they occasionally worked on drives from twenty years ago. On a modern high-density drive, physical percussion is how you scratch platters.
Don’t open it. The gap between a read head and the platter is smaller than a particle of dust. Opening the drive outside a controlled environment adds contamination to whatever problem you already have.
What recovery looks like
The honest news: beeping drives are often recoverable, but they’re never a DIY fix.
Stiction cases require carefully freeing the heads from the platter surface — and usually replacing the head assembly if it was damaged in the process. Seized motors sometimes require moving the platters to a donor drive. Where the case falls on that spectrum determines whether it’s something I handle directly or something I’ll refer to a cleanroom lab — and I’ll tell you which it is after evaluation, not after you’ve paid for anything.

The bottom line
A beeping Seagate is a mechanically stalled drive. The data is usually still intact on the platters — the drive just can’t physically reach it. Power it off, leave it off, and get it evaluated. The single biggest factor in whether these recover cleanly is how many power-on attempts happened before someone stopped trying.
