This is one of the most common questions I get, and it’s one where I mostly have to point people elsewhere. Rather than not answer it at all, here’s the honest map — including the parts that work, which are more useful than they sound.
The short version: phone data recovery is not a smaller version of drive recovery. It’s a different discipline with different equipment, and on modern phones the physics of the situation rules out most of what people are hoping for.
Why phones are different
In a hard drive or a memory card, the storage is a component you can address separately. Remove it, image it, read it.
In a modern phone, storage is soldered to the board and encrypted with a key held in dedicated security hardware — the Secure Enclave on iPhones, a Trusted Execution Environment or equivalent on Android. The key never leaves that hardware and is tied to the passcode.
So even with the flash chips in hand and a machine to read them, you get encrypted noise. This is the same wall that Apple silicon Macs present, and it’s deliberate — it’s why a stolen phone is useless to a thief.
When your data is very likely fine
Before assuming the worst, check these. Most “my phone died with all my photos” situations resolve here.
iCloud Photos or Google Photos. If sync was on — and it’s on by default for most people — your photos are already on a server. Sign in from any browser.
iCloud Backup or Google One backup. Restores to a replacement phone.
A computer backup. Finder, iTunes, or an Android backup on a PC you’ve used.
Your carrier or Samsung/Xiaomi cloud account. Manufacturer cloud services duplicate a lot of this.
It’s worth twenty minutes of checking every account you own before spending anything, and I’d rather you find your photos there than send me a phone.
When the phone still powers on
If it turns on and you can unlock it, you’re in good shape even if it’s badly damaged otherwise.
Cracked screen but the phone works? A cheap USB-C or Lightning to HDMI adapter, or an OTG mouse, will let you navigate a broken display long enough to trigger a backup. Screen repair shops do data transfers routinely and cheaply.
Water damage but it still boots? Back it up immediately, right now, before doing anything else. Corrosion is progressive and the phone that works today may not work Thursday. Same principle as a water-damaged drive: the clock is chemical.
Phone works but you deleted something? Check the Recently Deleted album — 30 days on iOS, similar on Google Photos.

When the phone is dead
This is where it gets specialized, and where I refer out.
If a phone won’t power on, the question is whether the fault is on the board or in the storage. On modern phones, the realistic path is board-level microsoldering: a specialist diagnoses the board under a microscope, replaces failed components, and revives the phone enough to boot once and back itself up.
That’s genuine expertise with a real success rate on liquid damage and charging-circuit failures. It is not my bench — I don’t do microsoldering and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
The technique you may have read about of transplanting the flash chip to a donor board does not work on modern phones, because the storage is cryptographically bound to the original processor. On older devices — iPhone 5 era and earlier, and some budget Androids — it sometimes does. If your phone is that old, it’s worth asking a microsoldering specialist about.
Where I can help: if the phone stored things on a removable microSD card, that card is ordinary flash media and it’s a normal recovery. Plenty of Android phones do this, and it covers photos and video more often than people expect.
What nobody can do
- Decrypt a modern phone without the passcode. Not me, not a lab, not a service advertising it online. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
- Recover from a phone whose board is destroyed — fire, severe crush damage, deep corrosion across the processor.
- Bypass Activation Lock or a Google account lock. Those are anti-theft features working correctly.
The bottom line
Check your cloud accounts first; that solves most cases for free. If the phone powers on at all, back it up today rather than waiting. If it’s dead, a board-level microsoldering shop is the right specialist, not a data recovery lab — and I’ll say so rather than take your money to reach the same conclusion.
